I was named after my great grandfather who was, according to my mother an incredible man. An entrepreneur with a heart of gold … I spoke to her about him recently and the feeling of realising that I could relate to somebody so close to my family tree gave me a weirdly enough, extremely purpose filled perspective on my life.
Lisa is my beautiful mother’s maiden surname … her side of the family was and is always filled with love. They came from nothing yet had everything … I remember the fresh bread my grandparents used to have, torn by my grand fathers hands, handed to me as a kid with a tall glass of milk. A lot of my pride rests in this name.
Botelho was my great grandmothers surname … she was a power house. A leader who carried the family solely … I vaguely remember her presence, similar to the feeling you get when you around somebody really important.
And then there is my surname, da Fonseca. A name that growing up was always filled with a bit of drama (what’s a family without drama). My father was filled with flaws but he’s positives outweighed the negatives … what I have really learned off late, and how I wish we would try do this more, is study the roots of things, surface level thinking is so dangerous. In my early days of life I didn’t want to have this surname, but as a grew up I realised I WAS THE NEXT FONSECA. I realised that one day my son would be the next Fonseca and now the pride I have for my surname and the people that came before is of a magnitude that’s hard to describe.
I believe our names carry such power. I believe that you cannot analyse and understand your brilliance until you understand the full picture, the family tree, the roots … now as much pride as I have for my family name and the incredible people that came before me, I take SO much more pride in our collective lineage as humanity. We fuss way too much over our differences, but when we begin to pay attention to our similarities (and when you study history your eyes will be blown away drastically) you will find that we should be taking pride in being apart of this incredible human race!
